How to Play Pokemon ROM Hacks on PC (Windows & Mac)

Updated October 20, 2026 · 10-20 minutes

📖Overview

A computer is still the most comfortable way to play long Pokemon ROM hacks. You get a big screen, a keyboard or any controller, fast-forward for grinding, and easy access to your save files when a hack updates. Every major emulator is free and runs on both Windows and macOS, so the setup is nearly identical on either system.

This guide shows which emulator to use for each type of hack, how to patch and load the game, and how to fix the problems people run into most often. We focus on accurate, actively maintained emulators, because many modern hacks — especially those built on the decompilation projects — break in older programs such as VisualBoyAdvance.

You need two files: the hack's patch, from the creator's official page, and a clean base ROM dumped from your own cartridge.

⚡Step by Step

01

Choose the right emulator for your hack

For GBA hacks (Radical Red, Unbound, Emerald Imperium, R.O.W.E.), use mGBA. Version 0.10.5 is the current stable release, and it is the emulator most hack authors test against. For GB/GBC hacks (Polished Crystal, Crystal Legacy, Gold 97 Reforged), mGBA works too, but SameBoy (v1.0.4, October 2026) is the most accurate Game Boy emulator available. For DS hacks (Renegade Platinum, Blaze Black 2 Redux), use melonDS, currently at version 1.1. If you prefer one app for everything, RetroArch with the mGBA, SameBoy or melonDS DS cores works on both systems.

02

Download and install it from the official site

Get each emulator only from its official website or GitHub releases page. On Windows, mGBA and melonDS come as installers or portable .zip folders. On macOS, drag the app into Applications; the first time you open it, you may need to right-click and choose Open to get past Gatekeeper. Avoid 'emulator packs' from download sites — they often bundle adware.

03

Patch the hack

Open Rom Patcher JS in your browser, select your clean base ROM and the patch (.ips, .ups, .bps or xdelta), and click Apply. The tool shows the ROM's CRC32 and SHA-1, so you can confirm it matches the hack's requirements. Our patching guide covers desktop patchers like Floating IPS and Delta Patcher as well.

04

Organise your files

Create a folder such as Documents/ROM Hacks/ with one subfolder per hack. Keep the patched ROM, its readme and your saves together. mGBA and melonDS save next to the ROM by default, which makes backups simple.

05

Load the game and map your controls

In mGBA, use File → Load ROM; in melonDS, File → Open ROM. Then open the input settings and bind your keys or controller. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch Pro controllers are detected automatically on both Windows and macOS. In melonDS, map a key to the touch screen toggle if you play with a keyboard.

06

Set up DS BIOS files (optional)

Since version 0.9.4, melonDS runs DS games without BIOS files thanks to a built-in replacement BIOS. Most hacks work fine this way, but real BIOS and firmware dumped from your own DS improve accuracy in a few games. DSi mode is different and always needs the real files.

07

Save the right way

Always use the in-game save. Save states are handy before a risky battle, but they are tied to a specific emulator version and ROM, and they do not carry over when a hack updates. Copy your .sav file somewhere safe before applying any new patch version.

🛠️Troubleshooting

White or black screen at boot — the base ROM is usually wrong. Check the hack's required version (for example, FireRed 1.0 US rather than 1.1) and the checksum.

'1M sub-circuit board' or 'save file is corrupted' message — set the save type to Flash 128K in your GBA emulator's settings, delete the empty save it created and restart.

Freezes in specific spots — switch from VBA or VBA-M to mGBA. Several modern hacks, including Emerald Imperium and The Pit, recommend against VBA-based emulators.

Day/night does not work — enable the real-time clock (RTC) option; mGBA detects it automatically in most hacks that use it.

Audio crackles — raise the audio buffer in the emulator's settings or turn off fast-forward sound.

⚡Useful Extras on PC

Fast-forward is the biggest quality-of-life boost — bind it to a key you can hold. mGBA also offers a rewind function that is useful for practice, and both mGBA and RetroArch support RetroAchievements for hacks that have achievement sets, such as Ultra Violet or Scorched Silver.

❓FAQ

What is the best emulator for Pokemon ROM hacks on PC?

mGBA for GBA and GBC hacks, SameBoy for maximum Game Boy accuracy, and melonDS for DS hacks. All are free on Windows and Mac.

Is VisualBoyAdvance still good for ROM hacks?

Not for modern hacks. Many decomp-based hacks have bugs in VBA; mGBA is the safer choice.

Can I play Pokemon ROM hacks on a Mac?

Yes. mGBA, SameBoy, melonDS and RetroArch all have native macOS builds.

Do I need a BIOS to play DS hacks on PC?

No. melonDS 0.9.4 and later include a replacement BIOS, though real BIOS dumps can improve compatibility.

Can I use a controller?

Yes. All recommended emulators support Xbox, PlayStation and Switch Pro controllers.
