๐Ÿ“–About Pokemon FireRed Omega

Long before Renegade Platinum and Sacred Gold made his name, Drayano released Pokemon FireRed Omega โ€” an upgrade of FireRed that leaves the story alone and improves almost everything around it. Think of it as a better version of the game you already know rather than a new adventure.

The headline change is availability. All 386 Pokemon from the first three generations can be found, so a Kanto run is no longer limited to the original 151 plus a handful of extras. Wild encounter tables were redone, the starter selection was changed and new areas were added to fit everything in.

Trainers got the same attention. There are more battles along the way, and the difficulty is noticeably higher than vanilla FireRed, without turning into a Kaizo-style grind. That combination โ€” familiar story, wider roster, stronger opponents โ€” is the template Drayano would later refine in his DS hacks.

GameBrew lists version 1.0 from August 2010 as an IPS patch for a clean Pokemon FireRed (U) ROM. Download sites also circulate a build labelled v1.1 with extras such as a day/night cycle and the physical/special split, but where it came from is unclear, so we describe the original release here. Drayano provided documentation of the changes and encounter rates with the patch.

  • Redesigned wild encounters across Kanto
  • Different starter Pokemon choices
  • More trainer battles and higher overall difficulty
  • New areas added to the map
  • Official documentation of changes and encounter rates
  • Lightweight IPS patch for FireRed (U)

โš”๏ธDifficulty & Who It's For

FireRed Omega is harder than the original, but it is built to be fair. Expect trainers with stronger, more varied teams and gym leaders who can punish a single carry Pokemon. It suits players who found vanilla FireRed too easy and want a step up without learning a modern mechanics overhaul.

It is also a good pick for a first Nuzlocke on GBA: more encounter variety, a familiar map and a difficulty that rises gradually. Players who want Gen 4+ moves, abilities and Mega Evolution will be happier with Radical Red or Inflamed Red.

Because the hack is from 2010, the engine is still Gen 3 at heart โ€” type-based physical and special moves, original TMs and classic mechanics.

๐Ÿ’กTips for Your First Playthrough

  • Patch a clean US FireRed 1.0 ROM (1636 - Pokemon Fire Red (U)) with Lunar IPS, Floating IPS or Rom Patcher JS.
  • If the emulator shows a '1M sub-circuit board' error, set the save type to Flash 128K.
  • Read Drayano's documentation for encounters โ€” it saves a lot of wandering.
  • Keep an eye out for the known bugs listed below, especially items vanishing on Route 6.
  • Rotate more than one strong Pokemon; the extra trainers make single-carry runs painful.

๐Ÿ›Known Bugs

The hack's documentation lists a few minor issues. Some trainers may act as though you have already beaten them. The Cerulean Cave guard disappears from Route 4 and reappears in Cerulean City. Newly placed items, such as the Water Stone on Route 6, can vanish if your bag is full โ€” the Lucky Egg is the exception. None of these block progress, but grab items with bag space free.

โš–๏ธOur Verdict

Pokemon FireRed Omega is a classic 'vanilla plus' hack: Kanto as you remember it, but with all 386 Pokemon and trainers that fight back. It shows its age next to modern overhauls, yet remains a clean, fair upgrade from one of the most respected hackers in the scene.

๐Ÿ‘ Pros

  • All 386 Pokemon in a Kanto run
  • Higher, fair difficulty
  • Story untouched for a nostalgic replay
  • Small, simple IPS patch

๐Ÿ‘Ž Cons

  • Old Gen 3 mechanics only
  • A few minor bugs
  • Version history is confusing on download sites
