The Best Pokemon Emerald ROM Hacks Right Now

Updated October 20, 2026 · 12 picks

📖Overview

For years FireRed was the default base for GBA hacking, but Emerald has taken over. The reason is the pokeemerald decompilation: instead of editing raw bytes, hackers can now change the game's C source code, and the community-run pokeemerald-expansion adds modern Pokemon, moves and abilities on top. That shift is why so many of the most talked-about recent hacks — roguelikes, Kaizo challenges, Johto remakes on GBA — are built on Emerald.

Below are twelve Emerald ROM hacks that we think deserve a place on your emulator. Some are brutally difficult, some are relaxed adventures, and a couple reinvent what a Pokemon game can be. Most are complete; where a hack is still in development, we say so.

You will need a clean US Pokemon Emerald ROM (BPEE) for almost all of them. Patches usually come as BPS or UPS files and can be applied in the browser with Rom Patcher JS. Several decomp-based hacks warn against VBA and older mobile emulators, so mGBA, or an app built on it, is the safest choice.

🏆The List

1. Pokemon Emerald Rogue

GBAEmerald baseRoguelikeShort runsReplayable

Pokabbie's Emerald Rogue turns Hoenn into a roguelike. Each run takes roughly three to four hours: you pick routes, catch what you can, fight randomised gyms and try to reach the champion before your team falls. Between runs you return to a hub that unlocks new options. v2.2.1 offers EX and Vanilla builds, a quicker Fast Path mode and seeded runs for sharing challenges. It is perfect for players who love battling but have seen every story.

2. Pokemon Run & Bun

GBAEmerald baseKaizo-levelGen 1-8Nuzlocke

Run & Bun by dekzeh is built for one thing: hard, fair Nuzlockes. EVs are removed entirely, bosses have level caps, and around 500 trainer battles are redesigned with smart teams. NPCs let you change IVs and natures and relearn moves, so team building is quick. v1.07 from April 2023 is the current version, with Pokemon up to Gen 8, and it remains one of the toughest Emerald hacks you can beat without cheating.

3. Pokemon Emerald Imperium

GBAEmerald baseHardGen 1-9Custom Megas

Emerald Imperium, by iriv24, borrows Radical Red's philosophy and applies it to Hoenn using pokeemerald-expansion. The default mode removes the bag in battle and forces Set style; Easy mode drops bosses by two levels. Level caps, a nurse at each cap and Minimal Grinding Mode keep runs moving. Custom Mega Evolutions for the Sinnoh starters, Dawn as your rival and Sinnoh Gym Leaders as optional bosses make it feel fresh. v1.3.1 shipped in September 2025.

4. Pokemon Elite Redux

GBAEmerald baseInnatesHardRandomizer

Elite Redux, by Darkyy, gives every Pokemon up to three innate abilities on top of its normal one, which completely changes how teams work. More than 370 abilities exist, and modes run from Easy to Ace to Elite, though you can only lower the setting once chosen. Three level-cap options and a built-in randomizer add replay value. The v2.65 beta is fully playable. It is complex, so it suits players who enjoy theorycrafting.

5. Pokemon Inclement Emerald

GBAEmerald baseHardGen 1-7Decomp

Inclement Emerald is one of the first serious decomp hacks and still a favourite. Buffel Saft offers Normal, Hard and Challenge modes, level caps since v1.3, eight encounters per route and starters from any region. All non-legendary Pokemon from Gens 1 to 7 are catchable. v1.13 from April 2022 is the latest; the project is officially a work in progress, but the game is playable from start to finish.

6. Pokemon Lazarus

GBAEmerald baseNew regionGen 1-9Mega

Lazarus is Nemo622's follow-up to Emerald Seaglass and moves to an original region, Ilios, inspired by ancient Greece. It launched in November 2025 with more than 400 Pokemon from all nine generations and nine starters. Normal mode uses soft caps, while Hard mode adds hard caps and tougher Gym Leaders. The 2.0 update from February 2026 added six new Mega Evolutions, a level-cap toggle and a rebuilt DexNav, all with save compatibility.

7. Pokemon Scorched Silver

GBAEmerald baseJohto sequel750+ PokemonComplete

Scorched Silver, by Sloo, imagines Johto twenty years after Gold and Silver and rebuilds it on Emerald. You start in Cherrygrove and get caught between Team Phoenix and Celebi. More than 750 Pokemon appear, along with convenience touches like running indoors, HMs that do not need to be learned and a nature changer in Violet City. The author describes the difficulty as moderate. v1.3 from August 2024 is complete.

8. Pokemon Emerald Seaglass

GBAEmerald baseGBC styleFollowersRelaxed

Emerald Seaglass restyles Hoenn to look like a Game Boy Color game and fills it with cosy extras: following Pokemon, a pinball minigame, scuba diving and a Wishing Well. The roster covers Gens 1 to 3 with cross-generation evolutions, and Hard Mode is optional. Nemo622's v3.0 from 2024 added Brendan and May as playable characters. It is the friendliest pick on this list and great for a nostalgic replay.

9. Pokemon Glazed

GBAEmerald base3 regions5 startersClassic

Glazed is a long, old-school adventure across the Tunod region with trips to Johto and Rankor. You choose from five starters and meet a big cast of trainers along the way. redriders180's v8.6.3 is the last official release, while TrainerX493 and Tudou's unofficial v9.1 from 2022 adds a 1.5x critical multiplier and modern shiny odds. The thread was taken down in 2024, but the game remains widely played.

10. Pokemon The Pit

GBAEmerald base100 floorsRandom teamsShort

The Pit drops the overworld entirely. Inspired by the Pit of 100 Trials from Paper Mario, you start with three random Pokemon and battle down 100 floors, healing and shopping every five, visiting a tutor every ten and fighting a boss every 25. Singles and Doubles, IRONMON-style rules and a custom mode are included. v2.4.2 is the latest confirmed build. It is ideal for quick sessions on a phone.

11. Pokemon Emerald Kaizo

GBAEmerald baseKaizoNo itemsAll 386

Emerald Kaizo is pure endurance. SinisterHoodedFigure's v2.0 from March 2020 bans items in battle, gives every Gym Leader six Pokemon and pushes the Elite Four to level 100. In exchange, all 386 Pokemon are catchable and the level curve is rebuilt from scratch. It is the Emerald hack to play once you have beaten everything else and still want to suffer.

12. Pokemon Quetzal

GBAEmerald baseMultiplayer3 regionsIn development

Quetzal, by TenmaRH, does something no other Emerald hack does well: up to four players can adventure together, including co-op battles against trainers. Kanto, Johto and Hoenn are all in, and v0.9.1 lets you switch freely between them. There are 84 starters, up to six followers and Normal, Random and Nuzlocke modes. It is still in development, but already one of the most fun hacks to play with friends.

✅Final Thoughts

Short on time? Emerald Rogue and The Pit work in bite-sized sessions. Want a hard story game? Imperium, Run & Bun and Inclement Emerald are the classic trio. For something gentler, Emerald Seaglass and Scorched Silver are both excellent. Before patching, confirm you have the US Emerald ROM — a European or already-patched file is the most common reason Emerald hacks fail to boot.
