Pokemon Yellow Legacy
Kanto the way you remember it, with Gen 1's worst bugs fixed and all 151 Pokemon in one save
About Pokemon Yellow Legacy
Pokemon Yellow Legacy is what happens when someone who loves Gen 1 decides to fix it without replacing it. TheSmithPlays, the YouTuber behind Pokemon Crystal Legacy, led the project with programmer Craig and video editor Weebra, and released it in May 2024 as a prequel to their Crystal hack. It still runs as a regular Game Boy game.
The approach is conservative on purpose. You follow Pikachu through the same Kanto, but the systems underneath have been repaired. Psychic is no longer the untouchable type it was in 1998: Ghost now hits it super-effectively and works as a Special type, and Bug no longer hits Poison for double damage. Damage-over-time effects deal 1/8 of max HP, broken moves like Focus Energy and Substitute work as intended, and enemy AI makes smarter choices.
Collecting is far less painful too. All 151 Pokemon can be obtained in a single playthrough, without trading. Alakazam and Gengar evolve at level 42, Golem and Machamp at 38, and Poliwhirl evolves at 18. The Cerulean Jynx trade returns in Saffron City, and there is a little post-game content once you are champion.
Quality-of-life touches are everywhere: running shoes, a bigger bag with sortable items and descriptions, HMs used straight from the overworld, a prompt to reuse Repels, repurchasable TMs, and a Move Reminder plus Move Deleter at the Cinnabar Lab. Even Pikachu gets love, with a stronger badge boost and the ability to learn all five HMs.
The current release is v1.0.10, updated in May 2024, which also tweaked TM compatibility and boosted Explosion and Self-Destruct.

Difficulty & Who It's For
On its default setting, Yellow Legacy is a little tougher than the original but still friendly. Gym leaders and the Elite Four no longer spam items (only Cooltrainers use them), while dynamic level scaling for the middle gyms stops you from steamrolling Kanto with an overlevelled starter.
Hard Mode is where it bites: you play in Set mode, cannot use items in battle and must respect level caps tied to each gym. That turns the game into a fair, clean challenge that suits Nuzlocke-style play.
It is ideal for first-time Gen 1 players who want the original experience without the bugs, and for veterans who want one more Kanto run that actually feels balanced.
Tips for Your First Playthrough
- Patch a clean Pokemon Yellow ROM; the hack is built on Yellow, not Red or Blue.
- Pick up the Old Rod early โ it is sold in the Viridian City Mart.
- Use the party menu's DV display to pick your best catches before training them.
- Do not count on Psychic types alone: Ghost moves now hurt them.
- If v1.0.10 shows a white screen on your emulator, try another emulator or core before assuming the patch is broken.
What Changed in the Latest Version
Version 1.0.10 is a balance update. Exeggcute and Exeggutor can learn Dream Eater by TM, Cubone and Marowak get Swords Dance by TM, and Nidorina picks up Sludge and Earthquake. Explosion goes from 130 to 250 power and Self-Destruct from 170 to 200, among other PP and power adjustments.
