Pokemon Crystal Clear

Gen 2 already had the most famous twist in the series — a second region after the credits — but you still had to walk the same road every time. Pokemon Crystal Clear, a Pokemon Crystal hack by ShockSlayer, throws that road away. You choose a starter, choose where in Johto or Kanto you want to begin, customise your character and then simply go wherever you like.

To make that freedom work, the hack removes the usual locks: HM roadblocks, story gates and other obstacles are gone, and a bridge connects Johto and Kanto directly so you can cross between regions early. All 16 Gym Leaders are open from the start, and their teams and levels scale to how many badges you already own. That means your fifth gym is always a fifth-gym fight, whether it is Whitney, Lt. Surge or Clair. Regular trainers scale in the same way.

Crystal Clear is also one of the most polished Game Boy Color hacks around. It adds a following Pokemon, palette customisation, an improved Pokedex, expanded and new map areas, extra move tutors (egg, future, Gen 1 TM and event moves), a chaining and footprint system for breeding, and even houses you can buy in any town. Every one of the 251 original Pokemon can be caught, and a new Elite Four waits at the end along with gym rematches.

The project has been in development since 2017 and is still maintained. The creator's site states that the official home for downloads, announcements and documentation is the Crystal Clear Discord, and it warns against grabbing the patch from other websites or buying pre-made cartridges. The most widely mirrored public build is v2.5.10 (January 2024); ROM sites have since listed a 2.6.0 build dated March 2026, but because the official page only points to Discord, check there for the version that is actually current.

Crystal Clear is not a difficulty hack. Because gyms and trainers scale to your badges, the game rarely becomes trivial, but it also never throws a Kaizo-style wall at you. The challenge feels like a slightly sharper version of Crystal.

It is ideal for players who know Gen 2 by heart and want to experience it in a new order, for Nuzlocke and challenge-run fans who like picking an unusual starter, and for anyone who wants a relaxed GBC game with a lot of freedom. If you want Gen 4+ mechanics like the physical/special split or abilities, Polished Crystal is a better fit.

• Patch the hack onto a clean English Pokemon Crystal ROM. The patch is distributed as a .bps file.
• Get the patch from the official Discord linked on ShockSlayer's site — the creator says copies on other sites may be outdated or unsafe.
• Your starting town matters more than you think: early routes decide which Pokemon you can catch before the first gym.
• Since gyms scale, take the leaders whose type your team handles best first, and save the awkward matchups for when your team is complete.
• Look for the new move tutors early; egg and future-generation moves can make Gen 2 Pokemon much more viable.
• Saves carry over between updates, but read the update notes for the steps (the FAQ describes saving in a Pokemon Center before upgrading).

The v2.5 updates were mostly refinement. v2.5.10 added a special animation and message when you meet a Pokemon with all-zero DVs, with soft resetting locked until the battle begins — the same protection shinies get. It also fixed a start-menu crash on some hardware, a Day-Care text bug during the Bug-Catching Contest and several dialogue errors.

Newer builds are announced on the Crystal Clear Discord first. The project FAQ promises that save data will always be transferable to the next update, so you do not have to restart when a new version lands.
