Pokemon Polished Crystal
Gen 2 rebuilt with modern mechanics, regional forms and new areas โ still running on Game Boy Color hardware
About Pokemon Polished Crystal
Most Gen 2 hacks either keep the old mechanics or abandon the Game Boy Color for a GBA engine. Pokemon Polished Crystal does neither: it is a Pokemon Crystal hack built on the pret disassembly that pulls almost two decades of series changes back into a GBC game. Rangi42 owns the open-source repository, and the project is developed by a small team with contributions from the wider community.
The goal stated in the project's README is to fix the original's bugs, adopt the official changes made since 2001 and add original ideas on top. In practice that means the physical/special split, the Fairy type, abilities and natures, an updated battle engine with modern move behaviour, 73 new moves, 75 reusable TMs and 31 move tutors. Shininess, gender and natures are no longer tied to DVs; DVs now only control a subtle colour variation, so two Pokemon of the same species can look slightly different.
The roster grows to 289 species, including new evolutions, plus 46 regional variants (Alolan, Galarian and Hisuian forms) and 56 cosmetic forms such as Magikarp patterns and Pikachu with Fly or Surf โ 391 unique Pokemon overall. Maps were revamped too: some areas return from Red, Blue and Yellow, some are rebuilt from HeartGold and SoulSilver, and others are original โ the 3.2 notes mention places like Celadon University, Yellow Forest and Lucky Island. Characters like Lorelei, Agatha, Lyra and the Team Rocket executives join the cast.
Version 3.2.0 arrived on 13 October 2025 as a full start-to-finish release, and the hotfixes that followed ended at v3.2.3 on 12 December 2025. Each release ships a regular ROM, a faithful build that leaves out some non-canon changes, and a debug build.

Difficulty & Who It's For
Polished Crystal is not a punishing hack, but it is clearly harder than the original. The level curve was redone so the challenge rises steadily instead of plateauing in the middle of Johto, and trainers use newer Pokemon with sensible movesets. Players on r/PokemonROMhacks often describe the curve as raised but well balanced.
It suits players who love Gen 2's atmosphere and want it to play like a modern game. If your main goal is an open map and choosing your own route, Crystal Clear is the better match; if you want a brutal challenge, look at a difficulty hack instead.
Tips for Your First Playthrough
- Download only from the official GitHub releases page and pick the regular or the faithful build before you start.
- Look through the New Game options carefully โ natures, abilities and the EV system are set there.
- Avoid save states as your main way of saving: the new box system can be corrupted by some emulators, especially with save states.
- Do not use PKHeX or vanilla Crystal cheat codes; the data structure is different and can break your save. The developers recommend their own save editor.
- Keep PolishedDex (polisheddex.app) open on your phone โ it lists locations, learnsets and events for the current version.
What Changed in the Latest Version
The 3.2 series reworked the summary screen with a dedicated egg page, added Pokedex and Pokegear icons, reintroduced trade evolutions, made modern EV rules the default and added an optional no-exp mode and new move tutors.
The following hotfixes were small but important: 3.2.1 temporarily disabled trading Pokemon that hold mail, 3.2.2 changed the link version and added a new Marowak sprite, and 3.2.3 fixed a crash when Flare Blitz is called by Metronome or Sleep Talk. Saves from 3.2.0 onward need no patching; saves from 3.0.0-beta through 3.1.1 can be upgraded with the Polished Save Patcher.

FAQ
Who made Pokemon Polished Crystal?
The project is hosted on GitHub by Rangi42 and developed by the Polished Crystal team on top of the pret Pokemon Crystal disassembly.
Is Polished Crystal finished?
Yes. Version 3.2 is playable from start to finish, and v3.2.3 (December 2025) is the latest stable release. A rolling development build exists but is not meant for normal play.
What is the faithful version of Polished Crystal?
It is an alternate build that leaves out some changes that are not canon to the official games, for example it has 72 new moves instead of 73. Everything else plays the same.
How many Pokemon are in Polished Crystal?
289 species including new evolutions, plus 46 regional variants and 56 cosmetic forms, for 391 unique Pokemon.
Can I use PKHeX or cheats with Polished Crystal?
No. Its save structure differs from vanilla Crystal, so PKHeX and normal cheat codes can corrupt your save. Use the save editor the developers link to instead.
Can I continue an old save in v3.2.3?
Saves from 3.2.0 or later work directly. Saves from 3.0.0-beta to 3.1.1 need the Polished Save Patcher, and 2.x saves cannot be upgraded.
