๐Ÿ“–About Pokemon Emerald Enhanced

Pokemon Emerald Enhanced is Ryuhouji's long-running overhaul of Pokemon Emerald, and the name undersells it a little. The Hoenn map and main plot are still there, but almost every system around them has been rebuilt: the roster grows to 684 Pokemon, you pick from seven unusual starters, enemies scale to your progress, and companions can walk with you and fight alongside you in the toughest battles.

The hack has been through a lot of versions โ€” PokeHarbor's history alone runs from the v9 series through several v10 builds โ€” and v11, released in March 2025, is the current one. In the release note the author called it very likely the last update to Emerald Enhanced, and the project is listed as complete. v11 also removed the old save-file check, so saves from before v10.0 will load, but the author warns they will have problems; start fresh if you were that far behind.

What makes it different from a simple 'Emerald with more Pokemon' patch is how much optional depth sits on top. There is a custom achievement system with alternate endings, a breeding-style IV project you run through a Lilycove lab, a Poke Ball changer, a Forecaster item that sets the weather, a custom jukebox and a New Game Plus mode where the world scales to your party instead of your badges.

The starting choice sets the tone. Instead of Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip you choose between Litwick, Beldum, Shinx, Ralts, Venipede, Timburr and Spheal, each adjusted so it performs at least as well as a normal starter. None of them is a traditional Grass, Fire or Water pick, which immediately changes how the early gyms play out.

๐ŸŽฎThe Six Play Modes Explained

Emerald Enhanced asks you to choose a mode at the start, and they are genuinely different games rather than simple level tweaks:

  • Easy โ€” four times the base experience, for players who want to see the content without grinding.
  • Normal โ€” experience and prize money scale with the number of gyms you have beaten, rising 25% per badge (12.5% in prestige mode).
  • Hard โ€” listed as a separate option for players who want more pressure than Normal.
  • Nuzlocke โ€” the author's harder variant of the game with Nuzlocke rules enforced by the game itself.
  • Hardcore โ€” no Pokemon Centers, more expensive Marts, less money, vanilla experience values, and fainted Pokemon disappear from your party.
  • Frontier โ€” skips the story and drops you straight into the Battle Frontier with a starter team and Battle Points to buy Frontier Pokemon.

If you have never played the hack, Normal is the intended experience. Hardcore is closer to a permanent-death challenge than a difficulty setting, so treat it like one.

โš”๏ธDifficulty & Who It's For

Because trainers and wild encounters scale with your badges, Emerald Enhanced never lets you steamroll Hoenn by over-levelling, but it also avoids the brick walls of a pure difficulty hack. The real threats are the wild bosses โ€” Pokemon with bright red names, 31 IVs in every stat, their hidden ability and maxed defenses at the start of battle โ€” which can end a careless run on their own.

This is a strong pick for players who loved vanilla Emerald and want a much longer, stranger version of it: lots of side content, collecting and post-game systems. If you want a modern Gen 9 battle engine with level caps, something like Emerald Imperium is the better fit; if you want Emerald with more Pokemon and many hours of extras, Enhanced is the one.

๐Ÿ’กTips for Your First Playthrough

  • Pick the starter that covers a gap rather than your favourite: Beldum and Timburr are slow early, while Shinx and Litwick hit hard quickly.
  • Run from red-named wild Pokemon unless your team is ready; they are built to punish you.
  • Followers are the romanceable NPCs plus Minnie, and each gives a passive bonus โ€” talk to or dismiss them to swap. If a follower gets stuck, press Left on the D-pad in the Start menu to reset its position.
  • For perfect IVs, visit the Training Center in Lilycove (leftmost computer in the left room) and use the Genetic Code Mapping System: consign up to 31 of a species and generate an egg with matching IVs and the nature you choose.
  • The Poke Ball changer is on the 5th floor of the Lilycove Department Store and costs 10,000 per change.
  • Play on mGBA if you can; on real hardware you need a flash cart with RTC and 1 Mbit save support.

๐Ÿ†•What Changed in the Latest Version

Version 11 adds a gacha machine in the back room of the Mauville Game Corner. You spend money or trade items to roll for random legendaries, mythicals and Battle Frontier Pokemon, and every legendary from Gen 1 to Gen 7 โ€” including event mythicals โ€” is obtainable this way. The pool rotates by in-game weekday, with Hoenn legendaries such as Groudon and Kyogre on Wednesdays and the Black/White legendaries on Fridays.

The update also fixes a number of bugs in Leaf's questline, which only opens once you are Champion. The preceding v10.2 builds dealt with TM learning bugs, overworld palette corruption and achievement tracking for the three newer modes.
