๐Ÿ“–About Pokemon Too Many Types

Pokemon Too Many Types asks a simple question โ€” what if the type chart had no sense of restraint? โ€” and answers it with an entire Hoenn adventure. Kobazco, Cannons and MarinePez built the hack on Pokemon Emerald for the YouTuber Alpharad, who commissioned it for his channel, and it went public in September 2023.

The headline number is 62. Too Many Types keeps the familiar eighteen types and piles on dozens of new ones, with names like Gamer, Smash, Furry and Magic. LaunchBox counts 44 brand-new types in that total. To make room for all of them, Pokemon can now carry up to three types at once instead of two, which pushes the number of possible type combinations past 230,000.

Moves had to follow. The hack adds 118 new attacks and re-types many existing ones, while plenty of Pokemon were reassigned so that the new types actually show up in the wild and in trainer teams. The result is a version of Emerald where reading an opponent's typing is a puzzle in itself and super-effective hits can come from directions you would never expect.

One standout piece of design is the Emerald type, which is reserved for Rayquaza (and Silvally holding the matching disk). It hits everything super-effectively and resists everything, a deliberately absurd reward that fits the tone of the whole project.

The hack is distributed as a patch through Alpharad's community channels. A separate sequel, Pokemon Too Many Types 2, came out in December 2025 with its own new batch of types; this page covers the original Emerald release.

โš”๏ธDifficulty & Who It's For

Too Many Types is not a difficulty hack in the Radical Red sense. Its challenge comes from information overload: with 62 types and triple typings, your instincts from twenty years of Pokemon stop working. A Water move might be resisted for a reason you have never seen before, and a harmless-looking wild Pokemon can carry a weakness-covering third type.

That makes it a great pick for players who already know Emerald inside out and want something fresh and silly, and for anyone who watched Alpharad's videos and wants to experience the chaos first-hand. Players who enjoy theorycrafting will find a lot to chew on in the new chart.

If you are looking for a clean, balanced competitive experience or a serious story, look elsewhere. The humour is internet-flavoured and the balance is intentionally wild โ€” that is the point.

๐Ÿ’กTips for Your First Playthrough

  • Keep a type chart for the hack open in another window โ€” guessing will get you swept.
  • Check the summary screen of every new catch; the third type often changes how a Pokemon should be used.
  • Favour Pokemon with wide movepools so you can react to unexpected resistances.
  • Save before gyms and try a few leads; matchups are much less predictable than in vanilla Emerald.
  • Expect weaknesses to stack. A triple-typed Pokemon with two types weak to the same attack can drop fast.

๐Ÿ“ฆToo Many Types vs Too Many Types 2

Two different hacks share the name. The original, covered here, is the Emerald hack from September 2023 with 62 types. Too Many Types 2 is a later, separate project produced for Alpharad by Too Many Productions and released in December 2025, adding yet another wave of types on top of the formula.

Patches for one will not work for the other, so make sure the file you download matches the game you want to play. Both are applied to a clean Pokemon Emerald ROM.

โš–๏ธOur Verdict

Pokemon Too Many Types is a joke taken seriously enough to be fun: 62 types, triple typing and 118 new moves turn a familiar Hoenn run into a constant guessing game. It is best enjoyed as a chaotic replay of Emerald rather than a balanced overhaul.

๐Ÿ‘ Pros

  • Genuinely unique type system with triple typing
  • Huge number of new moves to discover
  • Familiar Emerald structure makes the chaos easy to follow
  • Fun companion to Alpharad's videos

๐Ÿ‘Ž Cons

  • Type chart is nearly impossible to memorise
  • Balance is intentionally absurd
  • Humour will not land for everyone
  • Easy to confuse with the separate Too Many Types 2
