Pokemon Storm Silver

If SoulSilver was your version back on the DS, Pokemon Storm Silver is the way to revisit it with teeth. Drayano built it in 2012 as the SoulSilver half of a pair of hacks, and the other half — Sacred Gold — does the same job for HeartGold. Both share trainers, events and balance changes; you pick the one whose base ROM and mascot you prefer.

Storm Silver focuses on three things. First, availability: every one of the 493 Pokemon from Generations 1 to 4 can be caught somewhere in the game, without trading, with legendaries tied to special scripted encounters instead of random grass. Second, challenge: important trainers bring six Pokemon, rosters were rebuilt around the expanded Pokedex, and Kanto is no longer a low-level victory lap. Third, convenience, with fewer chores between the fights that matter.

The latest public version is v1.05, applied as an xdelta patch to a clean US SoulSilver ROM. The anti-piracy fix is already built in. Like Sacred Gold, it ships as a Complete patch with all Pokemon data edits and a Classic patch that leaves stats, types, abilities and movesets as they were.

Drayano also added new story beats on top of the original: a Legendary Trainer subplot, an Elite Four teleport system, a Team Rocket takeover of Route 47 and the Safari Zone, and a Porygon prize. Small route blockades make the order of Johto more linear, which keeps the level curve under control instead of letting you skip ahead into easy fights.

Storm Silver sits in the same comfortable middle ground as Drayano's other hacks: noticeably harder than SoulSilver, but fair. You will not be able to sweep Whitney or Clair with a single overlevelled starter, yet you will never face the item bans or perfect AI of kaizo-style hacks.

That makes it a strong Nuzlocke base and a good second playthrough of Gen 4 Johto. If you are new to ROM hacks, it is one of the friendliest places to start.

Gameplay is shared. Storm Silver needs a SoulSilver ROM and leans on Lugia; Sacred Gold needs HeartGold and leans on Ho-Oh. Wild encounters differ only in small details. Pick whichever base game you own — there is no strong reason to play both back to back.

• Use a clean, unpatched US SoulSilver ROM; apply updates to the clean ROM, never to an already patched one.
• Choose the Complete patch unless you specifically want original Pokemon stats.
• Catch widely in the early routes — the reworked encounter tables give you strong options long before the original game did.
• Prepare for six-Pokemon leaders by building type coverage, not just levels.
• Back up your save regularly; a few known bugs, like occasional flag resets, have been reported.
