Pokemon Light Platinum
A classic GBA journey across Zhery and Lauren, ending at the Pokemon World Championship
About Pokemon Light Platinum
Before decomp engines and Gen 9 rosters, Pokemon Light Platinum was the hack that showed a lot of players what a fan-made GBA game could be. Built by WesleyFG on top of Pokemon Ruby, it swaps Hoenn for two brand-new regions, Zhery and Lauren, and fills them with Pokemon from the first five generations.
The story opens with a dream: Arceus, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina locked in battle. You wake up at home to a request from the local Professor, and soon learn why you were the one who saw it โ you are the only person who understands the secret language of Alpha, something your father passed down to you. That ability pulls you into a quest to protect the Pokemon world while you collect badges across both regions.
Light Platinum was the PokeCommunity Hack of the Year in 2012, and its forum thread lists it as complete. It has new Gym Leaders, a new Elite Four, new rivals, fresh sprites and tiles, and a final event that most official games never had: a Pokemon World Championship after you become Champion.
Several builds exist today. The original Final version is the one WesleyFG released. A Plus version by LCCoolJ95 adds the physical/special split, more Pokemon and new moves, and a later Mega Light Platinum build adds out-of-battle Mega Evolution and harder puzzles. A separate fan remake on the Nintendo DS, based on HeartGold, released its first English demo in April 2026 โ it is a different project from the GBA hack covered here.

Difficulty & Who It's For
Light Platinum is built as an adventure first. It has no level caps, no forced battle style, no difficulty modes and no competitive-grade AI, so the challenge comes from the length of the journey rather than from punishing boss fights. If you are new to ROM hacks or just want a long, relaxed adventure with Pokemon you did not see in Gen 3, it is one of the easiest recommendations on GBA.
Players who want modern mechanics should know that the original Final version keeps Gen 3's type-based physical/special system. If that bothers you, the Plus build is the way to get the split without leaving this region behind.
Which Version Should You Play?
- Final โ WesleyFG's own release and the most stable way to reach the ending.
- Plus โ LCCoolJ95's modification with the physical/special split, new Pokemon and moves. It is known to have a bug at the final event that blocks progression; players work around it by moving their save into the Final version, finishing that event, then moving back.
- Mega Light Platinum โ a variant with Mega Evolution outside of battle and harder puzzles, for players who have already finished the original.
Whichever you choose, patch it onto a clean Pokemon Ruby ROM, not FireRed or Emerald.
Tips for Your First Playthrough
- Keep a backup save before the World Championship; early releases had reports of that event misbehaving.
- Use a balanced team โ Gen 4 and Gen 5 Pokemon here keep their original Gen 3-era move categories in the Final version, so check whether a move is physical or special by its type.
- Talk to everyone in each new town โ with two unfamiliar regions, NPCs are your map to where the story goes next.
- Save often in an older engine like this one, and avoid save states as your only backup.
