How to Play Pokemon ROM Hacks on Android

Updated October 15, 2026 · 10-15 minutes

📖Overview

Android is the easiest phone platform for Pokemon ROM hacks. You can install emulators straight from Google Play, keep files wherever you like, and even patch hacks on the phone itself without touching a computer. The only real decisions are which emulator to use for each console and how to turn a patch file into a playable game.

This guide covers the setup that works best in 2026. One thing has changed in recent years: DraStic, long the default Android DS emulator, disappeared from Google Play in early 2025, so we recommend melonDS for DS hacks instead. For Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance hacks, you have several excellent free choices.

Before you start, you need two files for each hack: the patch from the hack's creator and a clean copy of the base game dumped from your own cartridge. Hacks are almost never distributed as finished ROMs by their authors, so patching is part of the process.

⚡Step by Step

01

Pick an emulator for your hack's console

For GBA hacks such as Radical Red, Unbound or Emerald Imperium, install Lemuroid (free, no ads, uses the accurate mGBA core) or Pizza Boy GBA (very accurate; the paid version adds extras like cloud saves). For GB/GBC hacks like Polished Crystal, Lemuroid or Pizza Boy GBC work well. For DS hacks such as Renegade Platinum, install melonDS, the Android port of the PC emulator, from Google Play.

02

Create a folder for your games

Open your file manager and create a folder such as Games/ROMs in internal storage. Copy your clean base ROM and the downloaded patch there. If either is inside a .zip or .7z, extract it first — patchers need the raw files.

03

Install a patcher

Install UniPatcher, a free, open-source patching app available on F-Droid. It handles IPS, UPS, BPS, APS, PPF and xdelta patches — every format used by the hacks on this site. If you would rather not install anything, Rom Patcher JS runs in Chrome and does the same job.

04

Apply the patch

In UniPatcher, select the patch file, then the base ROM, choose where to save the output and tap the apply button. Keep the app open until it finishes. If a hack's readme lists a checksum (CRC32 or SHA-1), compare it with your base ROM before patching; a mismatch is the most common reason a hack crashes or shows a white screen. Our patching guide explains how to fix the wrong base ROM.

05

Name the file correctly

Make sure the patched file ends in .gba, .gbc, .gb or .nds. Emulators scan folders by extension, so a file saved as .bin or without an extension will not show up.

06

Load the game in your emulator

In Lemuroid, point the app to your ROM folder during setup and it will build a library automatically. In Pizza Boy, open the file browser and tap the ROM. In melonDS, add the folder under ROM directories and the game appears in the list. melonDS can boot many games without DS BIOS files, but adding your own BIOS and firmware dumps improves compatibility.

07

Set up saves and backups

Save inside the game regularly — the in-game save (.sav) is the file you will need when the hack updates. Use save states for risky battles, but never rely on them alone. Copy your .sav file to cloud storage from time to time, especially before applying a new version of the hack.

🛠️Troubleshooting

The hack freezes or crashes at a specific point — some modern hacks built on decomp engines, including Emerald Imperium and The Pit, recommend avoiding My Boy and VBA-based apps. Switch to Lemuroid, Pizza Boy or RetroArch with the mGBA core.

The game says the save file cannot be read — set the save type to Flash 128K in the emulator's settings if it offers the option, then restart. Hacks with a real-time clock may also need the RTC option enabled.

DS games run slowly — melonDS needs a 64-bit device with JIT enabled for full speed. Turn on threaded rendering, close background apps and avoid fast-forward on older phones.

Old saves stop working after an update — read the hack's update notes. Some updates are save-compatible, others require a new game.

🎮Controllers and Cheats

All the emulators above support Bluetooth controllers, which make long hacks far more comfortable than touch controls. Lemuroid and Pizza Boy also let you resize or rearrange the on-screen buttons.

Be careful with cheat codes on hacks with rewritten engines. Codes made for vanilla FireRed or Emerald often point to the wrong memory in Radical Red, Unbound or Imperium and can corrupt your save. Use codes written for that specific hack and keep a backup first.

❓FAQ

What is the best emulator for Pokemon ROM hacks on Android?

For GBA hacks, Lemuroid or Pizza Boy GBA. For DS hacks, melonDS. All three are on Google Play.

Is DraStic still available on Android?

DraStic was removed from Google Play in early 2025. melonDS is the recommended DS emulator on Android now.

Can I patch a ROM hack on my phone?

Yes. UniPatcher (from F-Droid) or Rom Patcher JS in your browser can apply IPS, UPS, BPS and xdelta patches directly on Android.

Why does my hack crash in My Boy?

Several modern hacks built on decompilation engines are not compatible with My Boy. Use Lemuroid, Pizza Boy or RetroArch with the mGBA core instead.

Do I need BIOS files to play DS hacks on Android?

melonDS can run many games without them, but adding BIOS and firmware dumped from your own DS improves compatibility.
